Dear Juno,
I think you made the right decision. Not because any other decision would be wrong but because you did what you felt would is best. You made your choice based on what your heart told you was right and that’s the important thing. As a 16 year old I know it was hard to make this choice, because that meant carrying a baby for 9 months, having a balloon as a tummy, giving BIRTH, and making the overall choice of going through with the pregnancy. Most teens wouldn’t have been able to go though all of that, I know I wouldn’t have.
If you would have made the choice to have an abortion, that would have been okay too. An significant part of this all is that you had the choice. If you wouldn’t, the situation might have been a lot different. This was the case for women during the 1960’s before Roe vs Wade. They became pregnant and decided they couldn’t go through with it, and regardless for the reason they made this decision, because it is THEIR decision, they needed to get an abortion. Unfortunately abortion wasn’t legal and many women had illegal abortions. That is why it is important that abortion remains legal. If it weren’t legal, women would need to get “back-alley” abortions, risking their life because people thought saving the life of an unborn fetus is more important than giving women the right to choose what she does with her own body.
If I was pregnant now, I would probably keep the baby. Not because I think abortion is wrong, but because that’s just what I would want to do. I would know that I have a choice, not making me feel like I’m only keeping the baby because I have to.
